In a statement, the GNR's National Traffic Unit (UNT) revealed that the operation took place today, between 3 am and 7 am, and 2,598 drivers were checked, of which 50 were arrested, 47 of whom for driving under the influence of alcohol (Blood Alcohol Content above 1.2 g/l).

A total of 245 traffic tickets were also issued, of which 213 were for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the GNR, the detainees were charged and notified to appear before the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The operation took place on the main access roads to the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, in particular on the Vasco da Gama Bridge – Alcochete, Setúbal district, Motorway No. 1 (A1) – Alverca, Lisbon district, Motorway No. 2 (A2) – Seixal, Setúbal district, on Motorway No. 5 (A5) – Oeiras, Lisbon district, on Motorway No. 8 (A8) – Loures, Lisbon district and on Complementary Route No. 20 (IC20) – Almada, Setúbal district.

This special road inspection operation also included reinforcements from the Territorial Commands of Évora, Leiria, Lisbon, Setúbal and Santarém, with a total of 143 military personnel being deployed.

The National Republican Guard points out that, “in addition to the seriousness of these crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main risk factors for driving, and is a factor that increases the risk of road accidents.”

According to the Traffic Code, driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances is prohibited. According to the law, this corresponds to a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.5 g/l. A level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l is considered a crime punishable by imprisonment.
