According to TUB, the line will start at Largo da Estação, near the railway station, and pass through key points such as Rotunda Santos da Cunha, Avenida Imaculada Conceição, the rotunda near the swimming pools, and Avenida João Paulo II, ending at Braga Hospital, near the Rotunda 24 de Julho, crossing the Gualtar campus of the University of Minho along the way.
The design-build contract was launched on 19 May. The line will stretch approximately six kilometres and include 12 stations in each direction. It is expected that buses will begin operating by June 2026.
The BRT system will be served by 12 articulated electric buses, each 18 metres long and with a capacity for around 130 passengers. Services will run every six minutes, and with an estimated commercial speed of 18 to 19km/h. Pantographs will be installed at the main terminal stations to enable opportunity charging of the electric vehicles.
Around 81% of the route will operate on a dedicated lane, with the remaining 19% on shared roads equipped with traffic signal priority systems to maintain efficiency.
By its third year, the system is expected to carry over two million passengers annually and prevent the emission of more than 430 tonnes of CO2. TUB highlights the environmental benefits and its contribution to better air quality, improved public health, and enhanced quality of life, aligning with Braga’s growing demand for public transport and urban mobility solutions.
