According to the Portuguese Navy, Praia de Faro recorded 25.7 degrees Celsius in the sea water, a value that exceeds the average of the last decade and is close to the national record.
The previous absolute maximum was also recorded on the same beach, on July 28, 2016, with 26.5 degrees.
According to the same source, this increase resulted from the combination of several factors, including the absence of strong winds, weak waves and high solar radiation.
These elements favour the surface heating of the water, especially in coastal areas less exposed to the Atlantic circulation.
The Portuguese Navy writes that, when these conditions persist for several consecutive days, the waters of the Algarve coast reach higher temperatures than usual, creating unusual scenarios for the summer season.
Another of the bathing areas with above-average water temperatures is Altura Beach, in the municipality of Castro Marim.
According to records, during the summer, it is possible to find values between 21.2 and 24 degrees Celsius there.
The same source mentions that the orientation of the coast and the shallow depth of the waters near the shore contribute to superior thermal retention, making these beaches particularly attractive for prolonged bathing.
The water temperature at Albufeira Beach also follows this trend.
According to the Portuguese Navy, thermometers have been recording values of around 21.1 degrees, making the bathing experience more comfortable for residents and visitors.
The same source explains that, although slightly below the peaks recorded in Faro and Altura, these values remain above average for the southern coast, which usually records colder waters even in the summer months.
