The Municipality submitted an application for the construction of the Olhão Municipal Fire Department operational building (barracks), for a total value of €4,490,097 with the installation planned on a plot of land with strategic characteristics to the city's road axes and the most efficient for rapid response to emergency services in the municipality.
An application was also submitted for the acquisition of four operational vehicles for fighting rural fires, for a total value of €915,000 (1 forest fire-fighting vehicle, 1 tactical forest tank vehicle and 2 light fire-fighting vehicles).
In addition to being subject to strict compliance with current legal provisions, these applications have already received a favourable opinion from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority.
“The Municipality's strong commitment to the area of protection and rescue has been a winning strategy, essential for the safety of the residents of Olhão and those who come to the municipality for work or leisure”, according to a statement from the council.
In addition to investing in infrastructure and equipment, the Olhão City Council continues to strengthen its human potential, and is currently recruiting 10 firefighters, with a new recruitment process planned for 10 more in July, in addition to strengthening the Municipal Civil Protection area, with 12 positions expected to be created (GTF and civil protection technician, technical assistants, telecommunications operators, special vehicle drivers and mechanics).
António Miguel Pina, Mayor of Olhão, said that “this was a long-standing and just desire and need of Olhão firefighters”, resulting in a continuous improvement in the working conditions of these professionals, as well as in the population's sense of security.
