The businessman, who is responsible for several rehabilitation projects in the Algarve, particularly in the municipality of Lagoa, criticises the abandonment of the property, which was acquired by a foreign investor, saying that the building has lost its significance.

“I am also writing these words as a foreigner. I was welcomed by this community and had the opportunity to invest, build and prosper in a region that offers security, quality of life and a unique environment,” he said, quoted by Lagoa Informa.

The businessman adds that an entrepreneur should be responsible for the places in which they invest, valuing their history and the value they have for the community. According to Erik de Vlieger, “the winery is not just another building. It is part of Lagoa’s identity. Unfortunately, the current owner is doing a disservice to society”.

The Dutch businessman also accuses the current owner of Adega Cooperativa de Lagoa of “harmful speculation,” accusing him of waiting for the municipality to feel responsible for acquiring the space again.

Erik de Vlieger argues that local authorities should be equipped with legal instruments that enable them to take effective measures in such cases. The businessman describes how local authorities should be able to compel owners to maintain or rehabilitate buildings of heritage value within a reasonable time frame, as well as having the possibility of imposing sanctions if they fail to meet the deadlines set.

The businessman adds that he is willing to help with the restoration of the Lagoa Cooperative Winery, “not for profit, but out of conviction,” as quoted by Lagoa Informa. Erik de Vlieger has taken this decision because he believes in the symbolic and practical value of the building. For the businessman, it is important that citizens see their heritage respected and well preserved.
