Over the next few weeks, the government will be responsible for reducing “a further 500 million euros in income tax by 2025”, as set out in the Government's programme.
“In terms of migration policy, in the coming days we will approve a proposal to revise the Nationality Law, a proposal to amend the Foreigners Law with implications for limiting access to family reunification, simplifying the process of repatriating illegal immigrants, and we will once again propose the creation of a foreigners and borders unit within the Public Security Police,” he announced, in one of the most applauded passages of his speech by PSD and CDS-PP deputies.
The Prime Minister also stated that investing in the authority of the security forces and strengthening resources are other political priorities.
“By the end of the year, we expect around 1,500 new members of the GNR and PSP to take up their duties, roughly 70% of whom will be guards and agents and 30% officers, sergeants and chiefs. We will also open new procedures for the training of 600 GNR guards and 800 Public Security Police agents,” he said.
As for the reduction in labour taxes, Montenegro considered it “a requirement of social justice and economic rationality”.
“Therefore, in the coming weeks, we will decide on a further reduction of 500 million euros in personal income tax this year, 2025. This new reduction will apply up to the eighth bracket, benefiting the lowest incomes, but above all the middle class, the class that is in active employment,” he said.
In his 17-minute speech, the Prime Minister also reaffirmed the commitment he made in his inauguration speech on national defence.
“Within the framework of NATO, Portugal proposes to meet the target of 2% of GDP in defence investment by 2025, promoting national defence industries and contributing to economic growth, with balanced public accounts and the preservation of the social functions of the state,” he said.
