“Between 25 April and 21 September, 2025, the City of Viseu invites the entire community to rediscover the city's Historic Centre with fewer cars and more space for people,” stated the Mayor of Viseu, Fernando Ruas.
Under the motto “Historic centre without cars”, the executive highlighted in a press release that the closure to traffic will take place on Fridays and the eve of holidays between 7:00 pm and 2:00 am; on Saturdays between 4:00 pm and 2:00 am; and on Sundays and holidays, between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
This initiative aims to “promote an environmentally friendly historic centre, without cars, promoting safe and comfortable movement for Viseu residents, visitors and tourists, who reside or visit” the city.
With the Viseu Municipal Police being responsible for carrying out the respective traffic closures, monitoring and providing support on the ground, the municipal executive said that the closure includes the main accesses to the old part of the city.
On days when there are shows or concerts in Adro da Sé, the cut will be made at the beginning of Travessa da Misericórdia. This same artery will be the access route during worship times and religious ceremonies at the Cathedral of Viseu or the Church of Misericórdia.
“Residents of the historic area, people with reduced or impaired mobility and hotel guests will have exceptional authorised access through Porta do Soar.”
