"As a precaution, and until the results of the water quality tests are received, and by decision of the competent authorities, the beach is closed for swimming," said the municipality of the district of Leiria, in a press release.

The city government explains that "a recent technical issue with the storm sewer system led to an anomalous runoff, accompanied by bad odours near the shoreline."

Although the situation was immediately identified and resolved, and there were no "visible signs of runoff or bad odours," the city government requested that the water at the pipe outlet be analysed to "ensure water quality and the safety of the population."

In the note, the City of Nazaré assures that it continues to monitor the situation, with reinforced monitoring and frequent surveillance on site, to prevent any recurrence.
