According to the European Union Statistical Office (Eurostat), in 2024, 5.1% of Portuguese people at risk of poverty did not have access to a meal containing meat, fish, or a vegetarian equivalent every other day.
At the EU level, last year, 8.5% of the total population of the 27 countries of the political-economic bloc did not have access to a full meal every other day.
Slovakia has the highest percentage of people at risk of poverty without access to a full meal (39.8%), followed by Bulgaria (37.7%) and Hungary (37.3%).
Cyprus has the lowest percentage of people at risk of poverty without access to a full meal (3.5%).
There is no vegetarian equivalent to meat or fish. That's why children die is they are fed a purely vegan diet from birth.
