As president of the Association for the Protection of Animals Algarve, her responsibilities are far and wide. “The deadline being the end of the month, when the house owners shut up and return to their homes in France. They cannot take Amigo.” Home is an apartment. Scratching head time.

“We arranged for Gail Skinner, the canine behaviourist and trainer, to help us out. Perhaps she could give us a hand, that special tip to get him to follow us into a car and become a rescued dog!” Exactly. Plan A: remove van from garage, lure dog with food into garage, and gradually close doors.

This will take a few days. “We only have until Saturday.” No problem. Plan B: get the kind neighbour to feed and water Amigo until the home-owners return around November and start Plan A again. Right. “Once we have him, we can transport him to a safe place, probably Gail’s, for assessment.”

Hopefully, after resting and a vet-check-trip, his needs will be assessed for future homing. Sounds exhausting. ‘Here to Help’ is APAA’s motto. Another dumped dog story, this is a Great Dane Female, reportedly found outside of Algoz/Messines area. More to follow when APAA has managed to locate and assess. “Another large dog story.” Jenny knows that the larger animals get dumped due to a lack of funds to feed and an inability to give a proper home.

“Our SNiP, Spaying & Neutering Programme is trying to deal with this widespread problem.” Trying to educate the populace is the answer. Getting an animal out of harm’s way before it is too late. “Puppies and kittens are absolutely gorgeous but when they arrive several at one time. It’s not so wonderful!”
