The same source states that André Ventura will announce his candidacy today, having called journalists for a press conference on September 22.

André Ventura had previously expressed interest in running for President of the Republic again, but changed his mind after the early legislative elections, in which he mentioned that he intended to focus on being Prime Minister.

"If you want, and you understand that I should go, I will be here. If you understand that I shouldn't go, I will be here. If you understand that someone else, or whoever, should go, I will be here too, as the one who best represents you," André Ventura stated at the National Council, referring to a possible candidacy for President of the Portuguese Republic.

Ventura stated, however, that running in the presidential elections early next year was not "ideal" and that it would be "a bad sign for the country if the opposition leader were to run for president."

André Ventura ran for president in 2021, when Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was elected to a second term in Belém, and received 11.90% of the vote, finishing third, behind Ana Gomes.
