The event is also considered one of the most beautiful ever.

On Saturday and Sunday, Lisbon’s streets were filled with ambitious runners who wanted to challenge themselves and prove that they can run a marathon.

The first marathon to ever exist aimed to commemorate the achievement by the Greek messenger Philippides, who allegedly ran 40 kilometres from Marathon to Athens, in 490BC, to report a victory of their troops.

It is fascinating how thousands of years later, the marathon still finds so many enthusiasts who, once again, have mastered the distance of this run.
