Japan’s notoriously tight labour market, along with its culture of 24-hour convenience stores, has created a national shortage of night shift clerks.

However, the gap is now being filled with remotely operated robots developed by Tokyo-based startup Telexistence, which have been deployed in 300 FamilyMart and Lawson stores.
Each robot is controlled from Manila, where operators earn $250-$315 a month to manage the country’s convenience store workforce.
