The initiative, which runs until the 10th, involves the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP), with enforcement operations especially on roads and access routes with high traffic flow, contributing to the reduction of accidents and the adoption of safe behaviors.

At the same time, ANSR (National Road Safety Authority) is carrying out awareness campaigns in Andrães, Vila Real district (Tuesday), Chaves (Wednesday), Pombal (Thursday) and Alcobaça (Friday), Leiria district, and in Tunes, Silves municipality, Faro district (on the 10th).

The authorities highlight that in Portugal, in 2023, one in four drivers who died in traffic accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.5 g/l and three in four had a level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l (considered a crime).

Of the total number of traffic accident victims autopsied, 23% had a blood alcohol level higher than the legally permitted limit, of which 73% exceeded the level considered a crime.

The ANSR (National Road Safety Authority), GNR (National Republican Guard), and PSP (Public Security Police) remind everyone that driving under the influence of alcohol is a risk for all and emphasize that with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 g/l, the risk of suffering a serious or fatal accident doubles.

They explain that alcohol reduces the field of vision, causing so-called "tunnel vision," and this loss of skills, as well as behavioural changes that can lead to states of euphoria and disinhibition, increases the risk of involvement in road accidents.
