There were no personal injuries and train circulation was not affected, according to a source from Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).
According to the IP source, the incident occurred around 11:00am due to strong winds, but “rail circulation was not affected.”
“Part of the roof, which is part of the station but is located next to what we call line 13, came loose and fell onto vehicles parked on Rua da Bica do Sapato/Calçada de Santa Apolônia,” the source specified.
Contacted by Lusa, a source from the Lisbon Fire Brigade said that “part of the roof of the maintenance building at Santa Apolónia Station, composed of sheet metal, came loose, falling onto the street and causing damage to some vehicles.” The same source from the fire department said there were no injuries, but they could not specify how many vehicles were hit.
According to the source, the street is closed to traffic and eight firefighters are on site, supported by two vehicles.
Civil Defense asked the population on Tuesday to adopt preventive measures in light of the forecast of rain, wind and rough seas for the coming days.
In a warning to the population, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) warned that floods and landslides may occur, with the worsening weather conditions in mainland Portugal, due to the passage of Storm Claudia.
Mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago have been under weather warnings since Tuesday, for different reasons - rough seas, wind or precipitation - at different times between today and Friday.
Fourteen districts will be under orange warning, the second most severe, until Thursday, due to heavy rain, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) announced today.
In the districts of Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga, an orange warning will be in effect between 9 PM today and 9 AM on Thursday due to "precipitation, sometimes heavy and persistent."
Faro will be under an orange warning between 9 PM today and 3 PM on Thursday for the same reasons, although between 9 AM and 6 PM on Thursday, this warning will be in effect in the district due to rough seas, with the possibility of "southwesterly waves of 4 to 5.5 meters, particularly in the western Algarve," according to IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere).
