Data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics) shows that between January and September 2025, "the number of passengers handled increased by 4.8%", with Lisbon airport standing out, concentrating 48.1% of the total passengers.
At Lisbon airport, there has been a cumulative movement of 27.5 million passengers since January, reflecting a 2.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
Faro airport showed a 6.1% increase in passenger traffic, representing 14.9% of the total and 8.5 million passengers, while Porto airport accounted for 22.7% of the total passengers handled, approximately 13 million, an increase of 5.8%.
Country of origin
According to the INE (National Institute of Statistics), the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for flights at national airports during this period, showing increases of 2.3% in the number of passengers disembarking and embarking compared to the same period in 2024.
Conversely, the INE adds, France registered decreases in the number of passengers disembarking, with a drop of 1.8%, and embarking, which fell by 1.4%, although it remained in 2nd position, followed by Spain, Germany and Italy among the main countries of origin and destination of flights, respectively.
Contributing to the year-to-date total were the data from September, a month in which national airports handled 7.2 million passengers, representing an increase of 3.4% compared to the same month last year.
In September, national airports also received 24,600 aircraft on commercial flights, representing a 4.0% increase compared to the same month in 2024, but less than the 4.9% increase recorded in August.
In the ninth month of the year, 82.2% of passengers disembarking at national airports corresponded to international traffic, totaling 2.9 million passengers, representing a 3.8% increase.
Among the passengers disembarking at national airports in September, 67.1% came from the European continent, a 3.3% increase compared to September 2024, while the American continent was the second main origin of passengers, accounting for 10.1% of the total disembarking passengers, a 6.2% increase.
Regarding passengers departing from domestic airports, 82.4% corresponded to international traffic, representing approximately three million passengers and showing a 4.1% increase. The majority of these passengers (68.6% of the total) had European airports as their destination, representing a 3.6% growth compared to September 2024.
Also, in terms of passengers departing from domestic airports, the second main destination was the Americas, with the INE (National Institute of Statistics) indicating that these passengers represented 9.6% of the total, after a 7.2% growth.
