Following the establishment of the Lisbon Metropolitan Council (after the municipal elections of October 12), Carlos Moedas (PSD) presented the single list for voting, composed of himself and the mayors of Vila Franca de Xira and Palmela, Paulo Ferreira (PS) and Ana Teresa Vicente (CDU), respectively.
The vote, conducted in secret, a nominal and weighted ballot, at the headquarters of the Lisbon Metropolitan Region, involved the 18 municipalities that make up that territory.
The list was approved with 16 votes in favour and no votes against or invalid votes, which equates to 92.8% of favourable votes representing 2,260,615 voters.
The first meeting of the new Lisbon Metropolitan Council was scheduled for December 18th. Meetings will be held on Thursdays, as was the case previously, by unanimous decision taken today.
The newly elected members will serve for the next four-year period, 2025-2029.
The previous Council was chaired by the former mayor of Sintra, Basílio Horta, whose vice-presidents were Hugo Luís, the current mayor of Mafra, and Inês de Medeiros, the head of the executive branch of Almada.
Basílio Horta assumed leadership of the Lisbon Metropolitan Council in July 2024, replacing Carla Tavares, the former president, who was then elected a Member of the European Parliament.
The Metropolitan Council is the deliberative body of the Lisbon Metropolitan Region, according to the statutes of intermunicipal entities.
It is composed of the mayors of the 18 municipalities that make up the metropolitan area (Alcochete, Almada, Amadora, Barreiro, Cascais, Lisbon, Loures, Mafra, Moita, Montijo, Odivelas, Oeiras, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sintra and Vila Franca de Xira).
