Uruguay now generates about 99 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. The government has prioritised lower cost and energy security, opening energy contracts to competition and removing fossil-fuel subsidies.

It has attracted roughly $6 billion in renewable investments and created tens of thousands of jobs, helping stabilise electricity prices and reducing dependency on imports.
Today, the energy mix is diversified between hydro, wind, biomass, and solar, making Uruguay an example of a small country that is achieving near-total decarbonisation of its power sector.
