The data was provided to Sul Informação by a source at the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
The dam with the highest storage level is Funcho (84%). Preventive discharges are already occurring at this dam due to the high levels.
Next is Odeleite, in the municipality of Castro Marim, which is at 83%. According to the same APA source, a scenario of eventual discharges is not ruled out here either, "for reasons of safety and proper management of water resources."
Last year, the high rainfall scenario also meant that these discharges had to be made, but much later: in March of this year, as reported by Sul Informação.
Odelouca, in the Barlavento region, is at 80% capacity, followed by Beliche (75%), Arade (59%), and, finally, Bravura (52%).
Compared to December 2024, the Algarve currently has 191 cubic hectometers more water. At this time last year, the region's dams were at 34% capacity, while currently they are at 77%.
For Pimenta Machado, president of the APA (Portuguese Environment Agency), this is "good news".
"The Algarve dams have enough water for three to four years of urban consumption," he told Sul Informação.
