The municipality in the Lisbon district has acquired four electric mobility scooters, representing an investment of €12,600, with €11,900 financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), under the support for interventions in public roads and the acquisition of electric vehicles, explained the mayor, Sérgio Galvão, to Lusa news agency.

In a pilot experiment, the scooters can be tested between January 3 and 6.

With the motorcycles, it will be possible to visit the historic centre, access traditional commerce and, during this festive season, take the route past the Christmas lights.

Following the pilot program, the council will evaluate the acceptance of the new means of transportation before defining the future usage model and making them permanently available to citizens, explained the mayor.

According to Sérgio Galvão, the investment is not an isolated measure and is part of a “broader plan for sustainable, inclusive urban mobility adapted to the unique characteristics of the historic center of Torres Vedras”.

With the integration of mobility scooters into the urban public space, the municipality aims to “promote improved quality of life, access to culture and the city, and social cohesion”.

During the pilot program, use will be free, but it cannot exceed one hour.

Electric mobility scooters can be used by residents or visitors over 18 years of age, people with physical disabilities, reduced mobility, or temporary incapacity.

The vehicles can be requested and used between 10:00am and 7:00pm, with pick-up and return taking place at the Municipal Market.
