The case is filed against Holcim, one of the world’s largest cement producers, over its contribution to carbon emissions. The islanders argue Holcim bears responsibility for climate impacts affecting their homes and livelihoods, including flooding and coastal erosion.

The case will be heard in Switzerland, where Holcim is headquartered. Holcim rejects the claims, saying governments, not courts, should set climate policy, but the plaintiffs are seeking accountability from a major corporate emitter rather than compensation from their own government. The lawsuit reflects a growing use of cross-border climate litigation by communities vulnerable to climate change.
