According to data released today by the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM), sales of Madeira wine in 2025 in Portugal showed a negative variation compared to 2024, both in quantity (-13.8%) and in value (-8.7%).

“In that year, sales in the domestic market reached 561,200 litres and yielded approximately €5.6 million, of which 468,200 litres and €4.6 million were sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira,” said the regional authority.

Exports to European Union countries amounted to around 1.6 million litres, generating a value of €7.3 million, which represented positive year-on-year variations of 4.8% in quantity and 6.8% in value.

Exports to third countries, in turn, stood at 904,100 litres, generating revenue of €7.7 million and representing a 6.6% decrease in quantity and a 2.5% decrease in value.

DREM indicates that in European Union (EU) countries, the highlight is the increase in sales in the French market, which remains the most important globally, with positive year-on-year volume and value growth of 5.9% and 14.2%, respectively.

In Germany, the second most important market in the EU, there was a drop in value (-6.4%), but an increase in volume (+0.6%), and in Belgium, the third most important market in the EU, there was a growth of 21.0% in volume and 7.3% in value.

“In the non-EU market, the United States of America remains the most important destination for Madeira wine, with a decline of 0.8% and 4.5% in volume and value, respectively,” the regional statistics authority points out.

The same occurred in the United Kingdom, where volume decreased by 1.1% but value increased by 9.8%.

In Japan, there was also a drop in quantity (-7.1%) and value (-4.7%).

"Of the total sold, 77.3% was bottled wine, sold at an average price of €7.88/litre (€7.84/litre in 2024). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of €2.84/litre (+€0.02/litre than in 2024),” reports DREM.

The regional statistics authority also released data on Madeira embroidery, a certified traditional product that recorded first-sale revenue of approximately €446,800 in 2025 (-12.4% compared to 2024).

In the year under review, of the total certified by IVBAM - Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts Institute, 7.1% corresponded to exports to the European Union, 68.2% to exports to third countries and 24.7% to sales in Portugal.

In the non-EU market, the United States stands out, with sales of €227,500 (-14.6% compared to the previous year), corresponding to 50.9% of the value of certified embroidery, followed by the United Kingdom with sales of €75,900 (+30.1% compared to the previous year).

In the EU market, the only country of note was Italy (€31.5 thousand, down 29.1% compared to 2024).
