The historic footbridge, which crosses the Arade River in Silves, has been temporarily closed off by local authorities since 2024 after it was found to be at immediate risk of collapsing. Today, the essential repairs are gathering pace.
The old bridge, also known as the Roman Bridge, dates back to the mid-14th to mid-15th century and has served as a vital crossing point ever since.
In 1963, faced with structural problems, which it was displaying, it was replaced by a new bridge further along the river. By then, the construction of the marginal avenue would enlarge the old bridge, which had been converted into a pedestrian bridge.
