The design uses a narrow band of red LED light to minimise impact on wildlife. The project brief sought the lowest possible impact on bats’ natural behaviour while still illuminating a road and adjacent cycle path.

Red light was chosen based on scientific research showing it is less disruptive to nocturnal species but still visible for human use. Bollards were configured to create dark corridors to protect light-shy wildlife.
