These anticipated delays are due to "operational issues" in implementing the new European access mechanism.

The new European Entry/Exit System (EES), for the digital registration of foreign citizens entering the Schengen Area, will conclude its implementation phase on 9 April, and Member States are required to register 100% of non-EU citizens by 31 March.

The implementation "is ending precisely at the peak of travel during the Easter holidays," warned the European airport association ACI Europe and the airline industry association A4E in a joint statement.
