McIlroy started the day on fire with a birdie at one and played a really impressive round throughout until the fifteenth hole – where the Northern Irishman missed a three foot putt to bogey the hole.

DeChambeau was wayward off the tee – but his short-game was immaculate for the whole tournament. The American hit some excellent shots out of the pinegrass, throughout the round.

After McIlroy’s poor stretch of bogeys, the Championship came down the stretch for both players. Both players found the pinegrass on eighteen and both missed the green on their second shots. It was a test of the short game and while both men managed to get their shot close – Bryson managed to play a superb bunker shot, which all but secured the title for Bryson, especially after Rory’s horrible putt from three feet on eighteen, which brought him back to -5.

Bryson has been outstanding in the majors this season, however, at times it felt like a Ryder Cup match as the US crowd seemed to want a DeChambeau victory. It feels like another major victory for Rory McIlroy will never happen at this point. Rory was -8 through fourteen holes and managed to lose to a -6 score.

DeChambeau meanwhile, has completely changed the minds of golf fans as he captured the imagination of the masses as he toured around Pinehurst with his U.S Open title – letting fans touch the marvellous trophy that he worked hard for.
