Another Portuguese architect is making waves across borders. Tiago Sá has been listed in the “Europe 40 under 40” competition, which recognises the 40 most promising young architects and designers in Europe. The three projects that led to the award for the Porto architect emerged from international public competitions won by his studio, sastudio, with local partners Hjark, all located in Iceland, according to a report by idealista.
The Höfn Community Center is a multipurpose building that supports various uses for the local community and visitors, with an outdoor park, in a privileged area previously designated for the construction of private housing. The project was awarded at the WAN Awards and won the World Architecture Festival - Future Projects.
Meanwhile, the ‘master plan’ for Vík í Mýrdal in southern Iceland is being developed in collaboration with local authorities and involves the planning and construction of new neighbourhoods in the municipality over the next 10 years.
Finally, the recently opened Gardabaer kindergarten near the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik has also received the Green Building Council’s ‘Sustainable Building of the Year’ award and the ‘Swan certified’ ecolabel.
The ‘Europe 40 under 40’ is an annual awards programme initiated by The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The award aims to highlight the next generation of architects and designers who are making an impact on the future of living and working environments, in cities and rural areas.
In 2017, Diogo Aguiar (Diogo Aguiar Studio) and Filipa Frois Almeida+Hugo Reis (FAHR 021.3), architects from the UPTEC community, also received this distinction. In 2018, it was Samuel Gonçalves, founder of the SUMMARY studio, who joined the list.
The winning projects of this edition will be exhibited at the Contemporary Space Athens, in Greece, from December 9, 2025.
