Saint Lucia has decriminalised consensual same-sex conduct following a high court ruling that laws criminalising intimacy between same-sex partners are discriminatory and inconsistent with international human rights standards.

Although these laws were rarely enforced, the country’s Criminal Code had prescribed a punishment of up to 10 years in prison for “gross indecency” prior to this ruling.
The court’s decision is the result of a sustained, courageous legal challenge by both local plaintiffs and regional advocacy groups.
