The decision was taken during the final ordinary meeting of the current council mandate, with the Socialist mayor stressing the need to secure the agreement early. He explained that the protocol had to be approved now to avoid potential disruption linked to the upcoming electoral period, and to ensure the Business Association has sufficient time to prepare the initiative. The allocated amount remains unchanged from 2024.
This year’s edition will see an expansion of decorated sites across the city, including the façades of landmark churches such as the Chapel of Souls, the Cathedral and the Church of St. Dominic. In total, around 36 locations will be adorned, covering streets, squares, avenues, churches and main entrances to the city, with the aim of boosting the local economy and attracting visitors.
The protocol includes a financial contribution of €185,000 plus VAT, directed at animating the historic centre and other key areas during the festive season. The decorations will remain in place from 8 November until 12 January 2026. Among the highlights are a 3D Christmas tree and the illumination of Avenida dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, which will feature daily multimedia shows combining light and sound.
According to the proposal, energy efficiency has once again been factored into the design, with LED technology and reduced operating times helping to lower electricity consumption.
In addition to the lighting, the municipality is expected to run its traditional seasonal programme, with activities for children, Christmas markets showcasing local artisans, and a variety of performances and events that bring vibrancy to the city throughout the festive period.
