In a statement, the Porto Metropolitan Command of the PSP details that a 41-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were caught in the Pinheiro Torres neighbourhood, in Porto, for theft of a motor vehicle.
The vehicle had been stolen hours earlier. Inside, there were some Apple AirPods, which have a real-time location system, which allowed the authorities to realise that the car "was in the Pinheiro Torres neighbourhood" and to "immediately take steps to locate and intercept" the car.
"During the approach, the driver disobeyed police orders, attempting to flee and colliding with the PSP vehicle," the statement describes in a report by NM.
During the investigation, authorities determined that, during the trip between Ovar and Porto, "the detainees refuelled at a petrol station in Arcozelo for €20.15 and, at the time of payment inside the store, using a debit card, it was cancelled, which is why the driver fled."
It was also determined that the car contained several items that had been stolen from two commercial establishments in Ovar, namely a television worth €190, two boxes of coffee, a bottle of Licor Beirão, a chocolate bar, a moisturizing cream, packaged meats with security tags, and various hygiene products, valued at approximately €130.
"The Public Security Police has a fast and efficient communications service that allows for immediate alerting to all its Commands and deployed Units, as well as to other security forces. The more timely and rapid the alert to the authorities, the greater the chances of success in combating crime," the statement also reads.
The PSP also highlights "the importance of the video surveillance system in the positive outcome of this incident, having allowed the monitoring of the suspects' movements that led to their arrest."
