The works are budgeted at two million euros and will be carried out under an action plan to reduce railway accidents and ensure the safety of people. They involve the construction of the new pedestrian overpass at kilometre 301.6 of the Southern Line, next to the Tunes Station, Infraestruturas de Portugal, reported in a statement.
The railway network management company said that the project will also “eliminate two existing level crossings in the vicinity,” one on the Algarve Line – which serves the region on two branches, between Lagos and Tunes and between Tunes and Vila Real de Santo António – and another on the Southern Line – which connects the Algarve, from Tunes, to Lisbon.
“The new pedestrian crossing will be equipped with elevators, ensuring accessibility for all, including people with reduced mobility, promoting safe access to land and homes on both sides of the railway line,” IP highlighted.
The investment amounts to two million euros, IP quantified, estimating the completion of the work for the third quarter of 2026.
The company stressed that the works will be carried out within the framework of an “action plan that Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has been implementing since 2024, with the aim of reducing accidents at level crossings.”
IP justified the need to intervene in reducing accidents at level crossings by citing the "risks this implies for the safety of people and for rail traffic," emphasising that an amount of 300 million euros is planned for the action plan.
