In a press conference, Francisco Gonçalves, one of Fenprof's general secretaries, said that “the diagnosis has been made for a long time” and that, instead of accelerating the revision of the Teacher Career Statute and adopting professional development policies, the Ministry “has done exactly the opposite.”

“In addition to imposing excessive slowness on the process, it seems to point to the devaluation of the career itself,” he declared, stressing that this stance contradicts “the needs of the education system and even the statements of the Minister of Education.”

The general secretary stressed that “teachers will not accept” this approach and announced that the data relating to the teacher shortage confirm the worsening of the situation.
