She and Jenny had been frequent visitors, and helped solve the long struggle of how to deal with the problem of ‘What happens to our pet(s) when we become ill, or die?’ Indeed, a lot of paperwork and ideas finally became the ‘Legacy Pet Plan’.

The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (aka APAA) had once been a shelter. Now a ‘Helping Hands’ Association. Animal Rescue Algarve, situated in ‘Cabanita’ outside of Loulé, is a modern, purpose-built shelter.

A lot of thought and financial input made this place the dream-come-true for abandoned pets. “Seeing this place, I knew that if anything happened to me, illness, death, that my lovely furry-friends would have a chance, a future home.”

Anita has committed herself wholeheartedly to the Ambassadorial role. “It is a challenge.” She smiles, No shirker! Not surprisingly, APAA is behind the project ‘Legacy Pet Plan’ one hundred percent. “No faffing about, we have to really face the problem head-on.”


Jenny is also a ‘Legacy’ person. “Taking the message to the people on the streets is one of the ways we can achieve the goal.” Signing up is relatively simple. Complete a form describing your pets. Agreeing to re-chipping and re-homing if you can no longer look after your little friends. Appoint a ‘guardian’. A card is then held with the details.

“All our animals at ARA get re-homed whenever possible. A ‘Legacy Pet’ will get VIP treatment and be given every opportunity, an A-lister!” Sid smiles. “We see so many unhappy abandoned animals, no need, they have belonged to loving homes, once.

For some reason, family and friends overlooked them when their owner became ill or died. Animals do have a sixth sense. They know something is wrong. But can’t do anything. At the end, they are our responsibility.” A beautiful video is in the making and will be posted on ARA’s website. Watch out for Anita, she’s hot on the ‘Legacy’ trail!
