In a statement, Porto Metro revealed that "the work is taking place only in the dedicated central bus lane of Avenida da Boavista, in the section between Jorge Reinel Street (near Colégio do Rosário) and Avenida do Dr. Antunes Guimarães, and between the latter and Miguel Torga Street (near Garcia de Orta School)."
"The work does not include the intersections with Antunes Guimarães Street or Campinas and Jorge Reinel Streets," the transport company stated.
This work "is expected to last three months, always in the central bus lane of Avenida da Boavista and always in this section, which is approximately one thousand meters long," and will be "continuously monitored by the Municipal Police." "In parallel with the progress of this Boavista – Anémona connection project, Metro do Porto is working on changes to the project that meet the objectives set by Porto City Council," the company further assures.
According to Metro do Porto, "designers are developing an alternative solution for the section between Garcia de Orta and Castelo do Queijo stations, in strict accordance with the council's requests."
The company also assures that "the commitments regarding EU funding for the project are not at stake," ensuring "deadlines compatible with the work completion obligations arising from the PRR/NextGenerationEU."
The alternative proposed by the municipality, regarding the second phase of construction of the Porto Metro, will eliminate the need to fell 86 trees, although this measure could affect the previously announced travel time.
According to data provided by a source at Porto Metro, following inquiries from Lusa, the solution initially designed for the second phase of the metrobus (from Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa to Anémona) initially included 267 trees, but the total number of trees was reduced to 305. However, with the alternative solution proposed by the Porto City Council, the total number would rise to 391.
According to Porto Metro, the project was revised following a request from the Porto City Council on April 1st, and on May 22nd, PSD/CDS-PP/IL mayoral candidate Pedro Duarte published a petition seeking to maintain the central cycle path and avoid cutting down trees, something with which the current mayor, Rui Moreira, agreed. The metrobus is expected to connect Casa da Música to Praça do Império (in 12 minutes) and Anêmona (in 17 minutes). The service's vehicles will be hydrogen buses, visually similar to those of the conventional metro, built for 29.5 million euros, including the power supply infrastructure.
The vehicles are already in the hands of the transport company, and the first phase of construction is complete, although the service has not yet begun operations. Currently, the Avenida da Boavista canal is used by bicycles and scooters.
On 14 July, Porto Mayor Rui Moreira stated that he would not "waste any more time" on the metrobus and would leave this matter to the next government.
On behalf of the government, Infrastructure Minister Miguel Pinto Luz said it was necessary to "make an assessment" and "stop," but "not stop for too long, because this needs to be implemented, and at the right time, a final decision will be made" on the operation of the first phase.
