France has 271 snail farms, but domestic production is struggling, and 95% of snails eaten in France are imported, mainly from Romania, Belgium, Turkey, Hungary, Greece and Indonesia. On a yearly basis, France consumes 14,300 tonnes of snails.


Authorities say the theft highlights the fragility of France’s already struggling domestic snail industry, and local police are investigating, but no suspects have been identified.
