A bird species in the Galápagos Islands, thought to be lost for nearly 200 years, has reappeared. The bird is known as the Galápagos Rail, a small bird last seen in the 1830s.

Researchers and local partners documented the bird during monitoring expeditions, suggesting a viable population has re-established. The return of the Galápagos Rail is seen as a sign of successful ecological restoration.
Conservationists credit the return to the eradication of invasive predators, such as rats and cats, on Floreana Island.
