I personally have had the pleasure of visiting most of the churches in the Algarve. The welcome I received as a visitor, a stranger, at each church was warm and friendly with no exceptions, no reservations, no qualifications. These happy communities are thriving, and I must say I was filled with joy and indeed the Holy Spirit at every single one.

To me, there are 3 main types of people when it comes to Jesus. Those who believe, and conscientiously practice Jesus’ Christian values of Love, Faith, Hope, Forgiveness, Service and Peace. Those who have Christian values and beliefs but have perhaps lapsed in their practice. Those who do not believe in Jesus or have not yet come to faith.

Worldwide, research surveys typically show that around 80% of people believe in God or some higher power.

In the US, a recent Pew Research survey suggests the figure is around 90%, whilst in the UK, according to a 2025 YouGov survey, around a third of people do not believe in some higher spiritual power – meaning two-thirds do! In Ireland, according to 2022 Census data, 79% have some religious affiliation.

Despite the bad press Christianity has had over the last few decades – some warranted, some unwarranted Jesus’ name is as powerful as ever. Really, who can say a bad word about Jesus? This is the case

whether you believe in Jesus, are a lapsed believer in the power of Jesus, or just do not believe in Jesus’ power at all.
