Thermal cameras detect elephants near tracks and alert train operators in real time, allowing trains to slow or stop. Since its implementation in Tamil Nadu, the system has enabled thousands of safe crossings with no reported elephant deaths.

The project shows how technology can support coexistence between infrastructure and wildlife as development expands into natural habitats. By combining conservation with real-time data, India is creating a scalable model for reducing human-animal conflict. It also highlights AI’s potential as a practical tool for biodiversity protection, beyond its more controversial or energy-intensive uses.
