The new facility, located in the municipality of Castro Marim, will officially welcome the public on 26 June and is designed to create a recreational space around one of the Algarve’s largest reservoirs.
The project includes a freshwater bathing area, swimming pools, landscaped zones, a bar and restaurant, sunbathing areas and seating spaces overlooking the reservoir. Local authorities hope the development will attract both residents and visitors looking for outdoor activities away from the coast during the summer months.
Blue Dragon
The Odeleite Dam, often referred to as the “Blue Dragon” because of its distinctive shape when viewed from above, is already a popular destination for nature lovers, walkers and photographers. The new complex aims to expand the site’s appeal while encouraging tourism in the inland areas of the Algarve.
Municipal officials say the investment forms part of a wider strategy to diversify tourism offerings across the region and highlight attractions beyond the traditional beach destinations. By creating new leisure infrastructure around the reservoir, the project is expected to support local businesses and encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the eastern Algarve.
Freshwater beach facilities
The freshwater beach will provide facilities typically associated with coastal resorts, including areas for relaxation, food and drink services and family-friendly recreational spaces. Swimming pools have also been incorporated into the development to complement the natural bathing area.
Castro Marim has increasingly focused on promoting nature tourism, outdoor activities and sustainable development, taking advantage of its proximity to both the Guadiana River and the Algarve’s inland landscapes.
The opening comes as demand continues to grow for alternative tourism experiences that combine nature, leisure and outdoor recreation. Officials believe the new attraction will become an important addition to the region’s summer offerings, particularly for families seeking a quieter environment away from some of the Algarve’s busiest beaches.
The complex is expected to begin operating on 26 June, ahead of the peak summer tourism season.
