The Hydra Project is expected to strengthen South Africa’s energy security while reducing emissions from electricity generation. Built with Hydra Storage Holding and Reatile Renewables, the project expands TotalEnergies’ renewable capacity in Africa’s largest electricity market.

TotalEnergies now manages just under 36 gigawatts of gross renewable generation capacity globally, while further large renewable developments are planned elsewhere in Africa. The Hydra Project combines a 216-megawatt solar plant with a 500-megawatt-hour battery storage system and will generate 400 gigawatt-hours of electricity. The facility will continuously supply 75 megawatts of renewable electricity to the national grid during daytime hours under a 20-year agreement.
