Diário de Notícias reported that Teixeira has received approval from CReSAP, the commission responsible for recruitment and selection within Portugal's public administration.
A date for the change in leadership has not yet been decided.
Teixeira is not new to AIMA and is currently a member of the agency's board of directors.
Borders service
Official records published in the Diário da República show that his responsibilities have included matters relating to the entry, stay, departure and removal of foreign citizens from Portuguese territory.
He has also previously stepped in for the president. A decision published in August concerning changes within AIMA was signed by Teixeira as a board member acting in place of the president.
AIMA was created in October 2023, taking over many of the administrative responsibilities previously handled by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF). Since then, the agency has been responsible for a number of immigration procedures that directly affect foreigners living in Portugal, including residence permits.
The agency has also been dealing with a large number of pending immigration cases inherited following the end of SEF and subsequent changes to Portugal's immigration system.
Leadership changes
AIMA's leadership has already undergone changes since the agency was created. Pedro Portugal Gaspar took over as president after the previous board, led by Luís Goes Pinheiro, was dismissed by the Government in 2024.
Teixeira's appointment will now bring another change at the top of the agency.
According to Diário de Notícias, Gaspar is expected to move on to other public duties following the transition.
The exact date when César Teixeira will officially take over as president of AIMA has not yet been announced.
