The surgery took place on 25 September as part of the hospital’s Senology Unit.
The surgical team included José Ignacio Chaviano Hernández, Henrique Morais and Gabriela Valadas.
The ULS Algarve announced the procedure this week.
Emotional impact
Laparoscopic surgery uses small incisions to allow instruments and a camera to be used during an operation.
The ULS Algarve says that, for some patients, the approach can allow incisions to be placed in less visible areas and may help preserve the breast skin, depending on the clinical circumstances.
The reconstruction was performed immediately after the mastectomy, during the same operation. The team said this may help reduce the physical and emotional impact associated with the loss of a breast.
This was the first procedure of its kind at the Portimão hospital. The ULS Algarve said three similar operations had previously been performed at Faro Hospital, which is also part of the regional health unit.
