A €1 coin issued in the year 2000, is now among the most coveted on the collectors' market, according to a report by Postal.
This coin was issued by Finland, a country that, although it only put the euro into circulation in 2002, began minting coins before that date, as part of the preparation for the introduction of the single European currency.
The coin in question stands out not only for its date of issue but also for its commemorative nature.
The coin was designed by sculptor Pertti Mäkinen and celebrates 80 years of Finnish independence, proclaimed in 1917.
The national side features the image of two swans in flight, a symbolic representation of freedom.
Although more than 36 million copies were produced, some of these coins, because they remained out of circulation or preserved in excellent condition, acquired a high value on the collector's market.
According to data from platforms such as eBay and websites specialising in numismatics, there are records of this coin being sold for values exceeding 1,000 euros, especially when it comes to coins in “Mint” condition.
The €1 coin in question is easily identifiable by the year of issue (2000) and the reverse with swans in flight.
