This year, the action will take place on Armona Island, in the heart of the Ria Formosa, and will involve the participation of around 220 volunteers, including more than 180 students and 21 teachers from school groups in the municipality of Olhão, as well as students from the University of Algarve (UALG V+).
Along with the land clean-up, the operation will also include an underwater component, carried out by CCMAR divers, with logistical support from vessels of the Portuguese Navy – Southern Maritime Department. The objective of the action is to remove waste and debris accumulated both on the beach and on the seabed, contributing to the protection of the ecosystems of the Ria Formosa, one of the most important natural sanctuaries in the country.
Since 2017, Operation Clean Beach has already allowed the collection of more than 8 tons of marine waste on several beaches in the Algarve. This year, with the support of the Olhão City Council, ALGAR, AMBIOLHÃO, ICNF Algarve, VisitAlgarve, CCMAR, UALG V+ and the Portuguese Navy, the initiative renews its commitment to sustainability and environmental education through the active involvement of the community.
