The exhibition “Camouflage”, a collective show by P28 – Association for Creative and Artistic Development, which brings together contemporary Portuguese and international artists around the theme of camouflage, opens its doors on 27 May in the Gallery of Pavilion 31 of the hospital, the organisers announced.

This exhibition proposes a reflection on the multiple ways of “becoming invisible”, bringing together works by artists such as Gabriela Albergaria, José Almeida Pereira, Manuel Botelho, Miguel Palma, Pedro Valdez Cardoso and Stella Kaus (artist in residence at P28).

They will be joined by historical names such as Abbott Thayer and Roland Penrose, pioneers in the exploration of camouflage at the beginning of the 20th century, and icons of contemporary art such as Andy Warhol and Christo.

According to curator Katherine Sirois, who leads the project with Lourenço Egreja, the exhibition addresses camouflage as a natural, cultural, defensive and offensive phenomenon.

“It’s about blending in and merging with the background,” says the person in charge, highlighting the way in which camouflage has changed the codes of representation in the visual arts.

“Whatever its visual tendencies and strategies, camouflage changed the representational codes of the visual arts from ‘look at what’s there’ to ‘go ahead, there’s nothing to see here’.”

In addition to the exhibition in Lisbon, the project will have a second stage at Casa D’Avenida, in Setúbal, between November 15 and January 2026, with new works and artists, expanding the approach to the theme.

Some events are also planned to be held alongside the exhibition, namely a conference by the French sculptor Patrice Alexandre, to take place on May 29th, in the main auditorium of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, on the role of visual artists in the First World War.

For May 31st and June 14th, screen printing workshops with Lucas Almeida have been announced, at the P28 studio, in addition to an additional screen printing workshop at Casa D’Avenida, in Setúbal, on a date yet to be announced.

In the late afternoon of July 5th, there will be a closing party for the exhibition in Lisbon, with a surprise ‘performance’ curated by Galeria Ana Lama.

In the words of the organizers, “Camouflage” promises to be an immersive and provocative experience, crossing art, history and social criticism, in a space where the visible and the invisible are confused.
