Tortoise emerged from the Chicago music scene in the early 1990s, with a core lineup consisting of John McEntire (drums and production), Douglas McCombs (bass), and Dan Bitney (drums and percussion).

This unusual double drum configuration became one of the most distinctive elements of their sound. Considered one of the most influential bands of the last three decades, Tortoise are pioneers of the post-rock movement, a term they helped define by fusing genres such as krautrock, avant-garde jazz, and minimalism. Over time, the lineup expanded to include musicians such as guitarist Jeff Parker and Casey Rice, solidifying their reputation as a cult band.
