The promotional action is part of an international campaign developed by the Association of Citrus Operators of the Algarve (AlgarOrange), the entity responsible for certifying these Algarve products with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), which runs until December 2026.
The initiative will take place at the Rungis market, located on the outskirts of Paris, one of the largest food distribution centres in Europe, which receives thousands of professionals from various economic sectors daily, the association said in a press release.
“Being in Rungis is being at the heart of European food distribution, directly showcasing the excellence and quality that characterise our production,” says José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange, quoted in the note.
The event includes tastings and presentations highlighting the unique characteristics of citrus fruits from the Algarve, such as sweetness, colour, and quality guaranteed by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
Main destination
According to AlgarOrange, France is the main destination for Algarve citrus exports, registering sales exceeding 55 million euros in 2024, a seven percent increase compared to the previous year.
With 234 hectares and more than 1,200 companies, the Rungis market moves 1.8 million tons of food products annually, being considered an international showcase for products of excellence.
Certified Algarve citrus fruits, which include oranges, clementines, tangerines, and lemons, are distinguished by their thin, shiny peel, high juice content, and balanced sweet flavour, the association emphasises.
Approximately 87% of citrus production in Portugal is located in the Algarve, and average productivity has grown sustainably in recent years.
In the 2023/2024 harvest, certified production exceeded 64,000 tons, surpassing the average of the last decade by 10%.
