The system, designed to improve soil conditions in extreme environments, is now being tested in arid regions of China. Scientists say the approach could support agriculture and ecological restoration efforts in areas affected by land degradation and water scarcity.
The technology was initially developed for future Moon missions, where researchers studied how to grow plants and improve soil-like materials in harsh conditions. According to the report, scientists believe the system could help stabilise desert soils and improve water retention in dry regions. China has expanded anti-desertification programmes in recent years as climate and environmental pressures increase.
