Foreign residents can apply online before their permits expire, while the agency urges applicants to keep their registered addresses up to date.
This measure aims to spread applications over a longer period and reduce delays for people who need updated residence documents.
As reported by Público Brasil, the renewal portal is open for applications for residence permits expiring by the end of January 2027, including certain investment residence permits (Golden Visas) and applications for permanent residence certificates and cards for European Union citizens and their family members.
Applicants must submit the documentation requested by AIMA, ensuring that all files are clear and legible to help the agency process their cases.
Which portal should applicants use?
The correct online service depends on the type of residence document and its expiry date.
Most residents whose permits expired after 30 June 2025, or are due to expire by 31 January 2027, should use the AIMA Renewals Portal.
Holders of an Authorisation of Residence for Investment (ARI), including Golden Visas, can also submit eligible renewal applications through this portal, as AIMA’s investment residence guidance sets out separate conditions for this category, so applicants should check that their documents fall within the applicable dates.
The portal also handles applications for permanent residence certificates for EU citizens and permanent residence cards for eligible family members who are not EU nationals.
However, people whose standard residence permits expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025, excluding ARI holders, must use the separate AIMA Services platform.
Applicants should check the agency’s latest instructions before submitting their requests, as the eligibility dates and available services can change.
Personal details
AIMA reminds foreign residents to ensure their personal details, particularly their home addresses, are correct in its records.
An outdated address could mean AIMA sends a newly issued residence card to the wrong location, potentially causing further administrative difficulties.
Anyone who needs to change or correct their registered address should use AIMA’s Contact Form, select Renewals Portal > Communicate/correct address, and attach the required supporting documentation.
According to AIMA’s guidance, address updates submitted through this route should be processed within two working days.
Applicants should also ensure that their email addresses are correct, as electronic communications are an important part of the renewal process.
Renewal receipts
The expansion of online renewals follows AIMA’s transition towards digital processing to reduce the need for in-person appointments.
From 15 October 2025, the agency confirmed that expired residence permits would no longer receive the general automatic extensions introduced during the pandemic if their holders had not started the renewal process.
Once AIMA registers an eligible renewal request and the relevant fees are paid, it issues a receipt valid for 180 days.
This makes it important for residents to initiate their applications through the appropriate channel rather than assuming an expired card remains valid automatically.
The latest extension gives eligible residents a chance to start the process before the deadline.
Those whose permits expire after January 2027 will need to wait until AIMA extends the portal’s eligibility window.
