"Following the adverse weather conditions and fog that have hampered air operations, SATA is making operational adjustments, reinforcing its response capacity, resorting, for example, to ACMI solutions," a source from the aviation group told the Lusa news agency.

SATA stressed that the "objective" of the operational readjustment is "to re-accommodate passengers as quickly as possible and minimise the constraints caused by the weather conditions.

Since Saturday, dense fog has led to the cancellation of several flights in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel.

In the case of SATA, which operates with Azores Airlines (which flies from the Azores to other countries) and SATA Air Açores (responsible for inter-island connections), around 175 flights were affected due to weather conditions in Ponta Delgada, according to a source from the Azorean aviation group who spoke to the Lusa news agency.

The situation caused overcrowding at João Paulo II Airport over the weekend and led the airport infrastructure to temporarily install a set of temporary beds overnight to accommodate passengers with cancelled connections.
